Disney CEO’s approach to web3

Bob Iger has stepped back into the role of CEO of Disney. And we know he is a web3 enthusiast.

He famously said:

• “When you think about all the copyright and trademarks, characters Disney has, and the NFT possibility, they’re extraordinary“

On top of that, during the time he was not in Disney, he invested in and joined the board of directors of Genies, a metaverse-related company, which:

• offers tools that allow users to create avatars & digital clothes

• operates an NFT marketplace on Flow

Disney Accelerator Program

In 2022 4 of 6 startups invited to the program were web3 firms:

• Polygon - L2 blockchain

• Flickplay - NFT-driven app that ties IRL locations with AR

• Lockverse - mysterious “cultural hub of web3”

• Obsess - metaverse-based e-commerce platform

And although Disney later laid off their in-house metaverse unit, they have never ended cooperation with companies within the Accelerator Program.

Polygon x Disney

Polygon attracts many web2 brands due to its low transaction cost & skillful business development team.

Although Polygon nfts are not very impactful in the nft space right now. Disney & Polygon may become the tandem that will change the #nft space as we know it.

Polygon was able to onboard over 3m with Reddit through Reddit's Digital Collectible Avatrs, what do you think they will be able to do with Disney which has a much bigger brand with a much bigger fanbase?

Veve Collectibles partnerships

Disney has been collaborating with Veve since April 2021 when they launched “The Rise of Ultraman” which featured Marvel’s character.

Fully branded Disney NFTs “Disney Golden Moments” came in Nov 2021 to mark Disney+ Day

So far Disney, Marvel, and Pixar have already launched thousands of licensed NFTs on Veve which include characters such as:

• MickeyMouse

• Spiderman

• Donald Duck

• Daisy Duck

• Pluto

• Goofy

• Tarzan

Disney hiring NFT experts!

In September 2022 the announcement that Disney is hiring “a transaction lawyer to explore emerging technology opportunities, including NFTs” made headlines across the crypto-related press.

A job ad posted on LinkedIn stated that the hire would “partner with business teams as they plan new global emerging technology projects" and should expect "accelerated and aggressive timeline"

Hints from previous Disney CEO - Bob Chapek

The former CEO was repeating that Disney is working on “Next Generation Storytelling & Consumer Experiences.”

It obviously may be related to blockchain & nfts since the concept of “decentralized creativity” is pushed by @a16z in Hollywood.

Conclusions

Disney recognizes the potential of Blockchain as the technology of the future!
